EVENT SUMMARIES

2007-2008 Program Year

November 8, 2007

What is your Purpose?

Are you living your life on purpose? If you were at the November 8, 2007, event, you would have received information and guidelines on how to get started. Our speaker, Ginny Robertson, president of Live Your Life on Purpose and founder, publisher, and editor of On Purpose Woman magazine, gave us ideas and information on how to lead that richer, fuller life we dream about. She shared that we can start by looking at things we enjoy, as well as things we don’t enjoy.

Ginny encouraged us to define purpose for ourselves. Our mission might not be to save the world, but we may be able to save a person. Share your ideas with someone you trust, who believes in you and supports you. But be careful not to share your ideas with those who will try to destroy your dream. These people don’t believe you can achieve your goals.

Ginny writes 10 things daily for which she is thankful. Her presentation was in line with the monthly quotes “Have an attitude of gratitude” and “Good friends are good for your health.” We were inspired by Ginny’s personal life experiences and stories shared by guests and members. Everyone had an opportunity to participate, and we learned how women are empowering others in a magnificent way.

Ginny is the co-host of Woman Talk Live, a weekly radio show in WVIE 1370 AM in Baltimore, Maryland. Ginny is available for personal consultation to help you Live your Life on Purpose.

Back by popular demand was Indra Books, owner of ON THE GO 4 U, LLC. Ms. Books was in our entrepreneur member spotlight. ON THE GO 4 U provides concierge and errand services, as well as personal assistance and personal shopping to individuals, companies, and condos throughout the DC metro area. Indra is definitely in the spotlight. Her business is "Providing More Than 24 Hours in Your Day." Her contact information is www.onthego4u.net and accounts@onthego4u.net (e-mail). Allow her to manage your concierge needs.

GWWN Suited for the Occasions

At our October 11, 2007, event, we received individual advice from speaker Rita Gworek of ImagebyRita. Rita encouraged us to look for our own personality style in clothes. Although a dress or outfit looks good to you, questions you can ask are, “Can I wear this?” or “Is it my style?”

Rita shared that beauty comes from within; clothes are just an enhancement. She talked about the power of the tailored look and how a few alternations can take your outfit to another level. For example, pockets add volume, which can be reduced if you tuck the flaps inside the pockets. Did you know that a blouse with a collar under a jacket gives the outfit creditability?  Rita works with men and women to help tailor their style.

Unique door prizes at this event included purses from Ms. Gworek and Ms. Books.

Great News! GWWN Makes a Mark

Our September 13, 2007, meeting was exciting, informative, and challenging. Our theme this program year is “I CAN DO IT!”

Executive Board members for this program year are Mary Greene, Executive Director; Jenifer Golson, Treasurer; Cheryl Blount, Director of Membership; and Tanetta Isler, Director of Marketing. Volunteers serving on various committees are Tina Holland, Membership Committee; Natalie Thompson, Membership and Program Committees; and Linda Worley, Finance, Budget, Marketing, and Public Relations Committee. Linda is the corporate fundraiser manager.  Jeanne Proscope applied for our volunteer event planner position from http://www.idealist.org. Jeanne serves on the Program and Membership Committees and is a member of GWWN and NAFE.

In addition to great networking and good food, the Management Initiatives Business Plan was unveiled. This plan will be shared with all members at a later date. The accomplishments from last program year were shared as well.

The upcoming program year consists of various community service projects, opportunities for members and guests to volunteer for program activities with the benefits of awards and incentives, and excellent educational topics presented by subject-matter experts.

We are excited about our upcoming speakers. One is a person from the White House whose name we will reveal soon. The other speaker is Sheila Johnson, a businesswoman, philanthropist, and part owner of the Washington Mystics Women’s Basketball Team and former co-owner of Black Entertainment Television. She will be our speaker on June 12, 2008, at our Leadership and Recognition Award Program.

We also are redesigning our web site—a vision we’ve had for years. Judith Desplechin, faculty of Interactive Media Design, Art Institute of Washington, has stepped up to the plate to redesign our web site pro bono. She will also serve as our web manager on the web management team.

We are grateful to Tiffany Brooks for serving as our web manager for the previous program year. Tiffany was instrumental in re-launching 2006-2007 and providing the connections for her successor. She designed an attractive announcement used for the GwweNet announcement and the web site. We wish Ms. Brooks success as she pursues her business goals.
